Let’s go back to the movies! In some Maryland counties, theaters once again can open their doors (although at restricted capacity). So now, rather than being limited to watching films in our living room, we may soon enjoy the option of sharing our viewing experience with neighbors. This latest loosening of the coronavirus rules reminds me of what we’ve been missing these past several months: the comfort that community provides. There is something special about physically gathering in large groups to watch a flick, hear a concert, or attend a football game. Even more meaningful is the privilege of coming together to celebrate life’s milestones—a bride and groom’s nuptials, high school graduation, or 50th wedding anniversary. At these events we are reminded that even relative strangers share the same emotions and the same humanity. And whether we tend to be the life of the party or prefer to stand in the corner off by ourselves, we all occasionally need to feel the healing power and sense of belonging that comes from being a valued member of a kindhearted community. During these difficult months, we have instead felt its absence.  Even those of us blessed with caring family, friends, and colleagues have borne the pain of seclusion. That’s okay. This is a scar we should retain. It can help encourage us to reach out to the lonely among us. Even after society has crawled ever so slowly back to “normal”, this memory of the isolation caused by the Pandemic of 2020 should inspire us to reassure the most vulnerable among us that they too are treasured and cherished.
