There is something reassuring about the arrival of Fall. It is the season nature chooses to announce with its most flamboyant colors, as if it uses this occasion to celebrate the comforting cyclicality of life.  Indeed, there is a security in experiencing predictable seasons as we progress through the years and life’s varied adventures. So as we make our way through the 2020 pandemic, it may be helpful to remind ourselves that crises, too, have their foreseeable seasons. In the initial season, the troublesome situation arrives unwelcome like a surprising blizzard, catching us flat footed. In season two we feel more firmly grounded due to a better understanding of the challenges we face and the first appearance—like spring’s first robins—of potential solutions. The third season is when we have settled into a routine that allows us to begin returning to normal and are able to feel—not just say like a mantra—that “This Too Shall Pass”. And in the final season, the crisis begins to dissipate. As it does so, we rake all the lessons we have learned into one big pile for us to study so that by the time the next crisis comes—and it will, as surely as the arrival of next winter—we will face it armed with ever more confidence, having discovered how strong, adaptable, and resilient we can be.

“In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.” Albert Camus
