What is my legacy? That is a question we all ask ourselves from time to time: What is the shape of our life’s footprint? A legacy is multifaceted. One part of our legacy is the monetary and tangible inheritance we bequeath to our heirs. But it is a mistake to consider “legacy” only in monetary terms. A legacy also includes the values, memories, and life lessons we leave behind. Think, for example, about the legacies of the first responders of 9/11, the anniversary of which we commemorated this past week. Each first responder who ran toward collapsing skyscrapers and unfathomable chaos gifted us the example of selfless heroism. Both those who survived and those who fell that day taught all of us that there are causes worth the ultimate sacrifice, that inside us are reservoirs of courage we cannot imagine, that the best life is the life spent serving others. Fortunately, most of us will never need to engage in such a heartbreaking and terrifying duty. But we all face challenges and difficult circumstances, some unique to our own lives, others—such as coping with the pandemic of 2020—we share with the rest of our community. Regardless of the tests we face, we have within ourselves the ability to craft a legacy we can be proud of. Every day you can add to your legacy by serving as a silent role model, going out of your way to help someone in need, providing comfort for the worried, visiting those who need a friend. Your examples of thoughtful sacrifice and small acts of kindness will help assure that the legacy you leave is priceless.
