Recently, I took a relaxing stroll through the bucolic country hills of Darlington where I currently live and near where I grew up. During this particular walk, I was stopped in my tracks by the fragrant scent of honeysuckle. What really hit me was not the sensation itself, a feeling I have enjoyed many times before, but my reaction to it. Somehow, I relished this experience more than usual. I just stood there and appreciated it as if for the first time. I believe as we continue our long battle against the COVID-19 pandemic and its financial ramifications, many of us will find this a common occurrence—namely, that our appreciation for the good in life is heightened by our ongoing challenges. Frankly, I think this is one of the elements in our makeup that accounts for our irrepressibility. It is how we find the physical and emotional energy to keep moving in a crisis as we make difficult but sustained progress, with occasional setbacks, as if hiking against the wind through particularly tough trails. We find that energy by instinctively pausing at certain points during these difficult journeys to reflect on wonders—such as honeysuckle–that help place our troubles in perspective. I hope all of you are doing this now, taking the time to enjoy such pleasures as family, friends, and nature’s gifts. Reenergized and refocused by our pause, we can then take on whatever crosses our path with ever greater optimism, confidence, and resiliency. And to think, what gives us such strength may be no more than a little sprig of honeysuckle.
“Follow effective action with quiet reflection. From the quiet reflection will come even more effective action.” Peter Drucker
