There are moments when the greatest gift we can give is our silence. Too often, our instincts are to impulsively propose solutions, dampen fears, or dismiss concerns before we have provided a person in need the chance to fully paint the verbal picture of their troubles. Whether we are seeking to comfort a loved one, friend, or perfect stranger, there will come a time for us to speak one of the golden phrases of our language: “How can I help?” But to fully understand the emotions another person is feeling, the panic they may be experiencing, or the disorientation they may find overwhelming, we must first go through the door they have opened for us and spend time in their world. It has been said that one of the hardest things to do in life is to just sit still. This is doubly so when we are aching to reach out and heal a person in pain, to remind them they have much to be grateful for, much reason for optimism. But for many, their blessings are hidden by the troubles dominating our world today—a dangerous and unpredictable pandemic, terrible injustices resulting from national failings we hoped we left behind generations ago, and a cloud of economic uncertainty that hangs over our jobs and businesses. And these day-to-day stresses can become unbearable when compounded by individual agonies suffered alone. In today’s world, “How can I help?” Start by practicing the art of Active Listening.

I do not ask the wounded person how he feels, I myself become the wounded person.”  Walt Whitman
